AP Spanish
(Two Semesters or Block)

Course Description:
AP Spanish Language students practice perfecting their Spanish speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. They study vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects of the language, and then apply what they've learned in extensive written and spoken exercises. By the end of the course, students will have an expansive vocabulary and a solid, working knowledge of all verb forms and tenses. The equivalent of a college-level language course, AP Spanish Language prepares students for the AP Exam and for further study of Spanish language, culture, or literature..

Prerequisites: Three to four years of Spanish or equivalent native fluency

Course cost: $350 / student / semester + required materials

Required materials: Microphone/headset, speakers/headphones, and a Spanish language dictionary

Course Outline Semester I

Unit 1:

I. Vocabulary
Nationalities of the world
Family relationships
Customs and traditions of the family
Most common cognates (for the AP Exam)


II. Grammar
Accentuation, punctuation and structure of correct sentences.
Regular verbs in the present and how to use them
Stem-changing verbs in the present and how to write them.
Subject pronouns.
Irregular verbs in the present.
Agreement of nouns and adjectives, gender and number.


Unit 2:

I. Vocabulary
Primary and secondary schools; universities
School subjects and academia disciplines
Professions
In and out of the classroom vocabulary
Student life


II. Grammar
Conjugate and use regular verbs in the preterit
Recognize grammatical errors
Conjugate and use irregular verbs in the preterit
Use adjectives correctly
Recognize Latin and Greek roots in words
Conjugate and use stem-changing verbs in the preterit
Use reflexive verbs


Unit 3:

I. Vocabulary
The human body
Sicknesses and deficiencias
Foods
Hygiene
Nutrition and physical fitness


II. Grammar
Conjugate and use verbs in the imperfect
Use correct subject-verb agreement
Know when to use the preterit and imperfect
To use pronouns and possessive adjectives


Unit 4:

I. Vocabulary
Sports
Travel and tourism
Pasttimes


II. Grammar
The use of the past participle
Uses of pronouns and interrogative adjectives
The use of prefixes and suffixes
The use of the present perfect
The use of the verb gustar and other similar verbs
The use of verbals and adjective phrases in the present perfect
The correct use of saber and conocer
